Pumice chimney precariously sited on the top of a steep rocky bank in a forested area of a retired quarry. Balanced atop a pile of firewood and resting against a tall pine tree. Pumice, steel, plywood, firewood, glue. Four-month duration. 5.5 x 1.4 x 0.75m.The Sculpture Park at Waitakaruru Arboretum, Tauwhare, Hamilton.
Cold Comfort is a monument to the hopelessness of human endeavour. The fire place has lost it's house and no longer offers warmth. The cold, glassy, pumice has lost all colour and stands gaunt in a forest that has grown over the place that once offered solace and comfort. The black and white elements of the work look lifeless against the backdrop of forest, flowers and farmland.
